ASIAN BLEPHAROPLASTY
What it is
While there is great variability in the shape of the asian upper eyelid, commonly the crease is lower than the western eyelid.
This is due to fibers extending from the muscle that raises the eyelid (levator palpebrae superioris) to the skin either not being present or inserting into the skin near the lash line. Eyelid shape is very much a personal preference. Some patients prefer the appearance of a higher crease and illusion of larger, more open eyes.
OUR PROCESS
What to expect in our process:
-
Consultations are the best way to discuss your needs with Dr. Sirius K. Yoo, our double-board-certified facial plastic surgeon. Call (858) 381-4801 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Yoo at our San Diego office.
-
Asian blepharoplasty is commonly performed on an outpatient basis. It is accomplished with local anesthesia, oral sedation, or general anesthesia depending on doctor and patient preference. The procedure normally takes one to two hours.
Dr. Yoo makes an incision at the predetermined height of the new crease of the upper lid. If there are age related changes to the eyelid, excess skin is removed as well as excess fat. The incision is then carried down to the muscle that elevates the eyelid and 4-5 sutures are then placed connecting the muscle to the underside of the skin where the new crease is to be created. To close the incision, Dr. Yoo uses fine sutures that minimize scarring.
-
Patients go home the same day. Bruising and swelling for a week to ten days is normal, but swelling of the area between the crease and eyelashes slowly goes away over several months which is a longer period than most surgeries. The effect of this is that the crease can look higher than where it will eventually rest.
Dr. Yoo may prescribe home care including:
applying eye ointment to prevent dryness
gentle cleansing of the eye area coupled with eye drops
avoiding certain activities and environments
At the one week follow-up visit, we will remove any permanent skin stitches. Self-absorbing stitches dissolve on their own.
“Dr. Yoo did an amazing job with my eyelids. Everything looks so natural.”
